Years ago the day services provided in Sherborne consisted of a weekly social evening at a local RAF services club, a 2 hour, weekly writing group and a 5 hour, weekly social drop-in at a bungalow in a Social Services complex for the elderly.
We felt that this was not adequate and did not in any way meet the demand and needs of people living in the area. We decided to promote our common aims and make use of our skills and experience to help others. In order to accomplish this we decided to open a members only drop in and café including internet facilities. We organised ourselves into a committee, meeting every Tuesday evening (officially a social group) and developed our plans.
Our project is a community resource centre run by its members in rented premises in the centre of Sherborne.
It provides supported employment and volunteer opportunities as well as training, internet and social facilities. We have recently changed our name to the Sherborne Centre for Wellbeing to more accurately describe the work that we do. You can download our March 2011 Newsletter here, our first Autumn 2010 Newsletter is also available for download.
In October 2007 we opened Zest Café, a social enterprise which promotes healthy eating and is open to the public.
The Credit Union Bank operates from the clubhouse on Thursday mornings and is for the benefit of anyone in the community.
Our four main aims are:
The promotion of social inclusion and well-being
Training, activity and employment
A safe, open access facility for members
A community resource
